Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition - New info!

Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition Logo - We Know Gamers

As some of you will already know, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition was announced at the same time as Capcom and Ninja Theory's Definitive Edition for the more recent release of DmC: Devil May Cry. Up until this point, little has been known about this newer version of DMC4 other than the fact it would likely have Vergil as a playable character, but now we have a little more to go on.

As confirmed on the official Playstation and Capcom-Unity blog, Vergil is indeed playable, along with four other characters. That's right, a total of five characters will now be playable in DMC4: Special Edition!

Dante and Nero will once again be reprising their roles, only this time Vergil, Lady and Trish will now also be playable, each with their own defining play styles.

Power. Give me more......power!
Vergil

Dante’s ice-cold twin brother and master of the iaijutsu sword fighting style. As described by the game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno, Vergil will have a fully upgradable move set based on his rendition in Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, with elements of DmC Devil May Cry’s Vergil added in, making this the definitive version of the character. He will also feature a new “Concentration” mechanic, which makes his attacks get more powerful the more flawlessly he fights.

Additionally, the “Grim Trick” ability, which allows Vergil to teleport using his “Sword Illusions,” makes for an action experience that will feel new and distinctly different from that of Nero or Dante.

- Vergil will be playable on any mission.

So much recoil, even my torso jolts backwards!
Lady/Mary

Playable for the first time, Lady's signature weapon, the Kalina Ann, features a grappling hook which allows her to traverse environments similarly to Nero, among other applications.

Lady's fighting style is conceptually quite different from that of the other DMC4 characters, what with her special emphasis on firearms and will feel like a completely different way to take on the action.

- Lady will be playable on Nero’s missions.
The true power of Sparda.
Trish

Seen as a badass ever since her first appearance in the original Devil May Cry’s opening cutscene, this rocker chick does away with the need for weapon switching, instead utilizing the versatile Sparda sword, her pistols and her bare hands in a variety of inventive ways. Trish allows players to fight with relatively few buttons, but is still quite a deep character with an awesome move set.

- Trish will be playable on Dante’s missions.

Other new features include:

- Legendary Dark Knight Mode: First introduced in the PC version of Devil May Cry 4, this mode pits players against an absolutely tremendous number of enemies, meaning you’ll have to adjust your combat strategy in order to survive and is promised to make the series feel fresh once again, even for long time DMC veterans.

- Turbo Mode: Enhances the gameplay speed by 20% across the board.

- Enhanced Visuals: 1080p support and up-res'd textures, while preserving the games 60fps framerate.

- Bonus costumes and skins that are fully compatible with all cutscenes.

- Numerous minor tweaks to game tempo and balance.

Devil May Cry 4 was originally released in 2008 and was Capcom's very first title for PS3. As a big DMC fan myself, it's nice to see the title making a return with a plethora of new features, but if Capcom are only focusing on the gameplay, aside from the odd new cutscene here and there, will it be worthwhile for fans to re-purchase a title that was otherwise incomplete to begin with?

It's fair to say that the level design in DMC4 has been the laziest so far, with even the most die hard fans being put off by the fact you had to replay virtually every boss again, while backtracking through each area you already visited as Nero. As such, I would have liked to have seen a more complete version of DMC4 in addition to all of the new features listed above.

Scum.
We still have some time before DMC4's re-release this Summer, so there may be several announcements to come, but the best case scenario is that we 'll get a full, complete story for Vergil that clears up the confusion between he and Nero's relationship. Then, in the worst case scenario, this re-release will be a repeat of DMC3's in the sense that we may get one or two new cutscenes for Vergil, but are likely to be replaying the same areas we've already played to death as Dante and Nero.

Regardless, DMC4: Special Edition will be released on Xbox One, PS4 and PC this summer and is currently set for a digital release only.

Hwoaaaaaaaaaaaar!
