The Bethesda E3 2017 Round-Up - Another Fraggin' Awesome Show?
This year, Bethesda took their presentation in an entirely new direction, opting to show us a narration driven animation as it guided viewers through all of the latest news and trailers Bethesda had to show.
To start things off, I'll begin with news on some of Bethesda's older, but much loved titles.
Doom VFR - Admittedly, this could be the most fun out of every VR title Bethesda had to show. Taking the fast and intense battles of the latest Doom title, you're now given a fully immersive trip to Hell. Without a doubt, Doom is an action game. It isn't scary unless you're below the age of 8 (in which case you shouldn't be playing it anyway), but throw Virtual Reality in and things are bound to intensify. Also, three guesses for what the F stands for in VFR...
Release date: TBC
Fallout 4 VR - Fallout 4 has now gone fully VR. On the plus side, VR is still pretty new, so ample support for it can only be a good thing right? Wrong. It'd be good if every VR title was new and never seen before, but re-releasing an old game just because it'll be fun to play again in a Virtual setting is a massive shame. New content please.
Release date: TBC
Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch - While this is good news for Nintendo fans, we live in an age where most people game on multiple platforms, so chances are high that a large majority of you have already played Skyrim to death. It was released on the previous generation of consoles and although it's nice Bethesda feel the need to continue supporting it, I'd have much preferred to see a brand new entry within the Elder Scrolls universe. Also related, during Sony's conference, they announced Skyrim VR for the PS4. Bethesda, I love you, but please move on and give us something fresh at next years E3 presentation. Doom 2, Fallout 5 and Elder Scrolls 6 would be amazing.
Release date: TBC
Creation Club - Can’t get enough Fallout 4 and Skyrim? The new Creation Club is a collection of all-new content created by Bethesda Game Studios and outside development partners is fully curated and compatible with the main games and all their official add-ons.
More info on that here.
Personally, I'm not ready to immerse myself fully with VR gameplay. I feel it has a long way to go until it's fully worth buying into, so Doom, Skyrim and Fallout VR means very little to me, but what does appeal to me are most of Bethesda's upcoming and new titles.
Quake Champions - I was always a fan of the likes of Quake and Unreal Tournament, so with the latest news on Quake Champions, there's a lot to look forward to here. Taken from Bethesda's Website, this is what they had to say; "The world of Quake Champions is getting a whole lot bigger. With the Closed Beta now open 24/7, anyone can hop in and be part of the intense action with just the press of a button. And with this expansion of the Closed Beta comes a ton of new additions to the game, including the introduction of Wolfenstein’s own BJ Blazkowicz. During the showcase, the Quake World Championships were also announced. See the links below to find out how you can win your share of the $1 million prize pool."
You can find the link to take part in the Quake World Championships here.
The Evil Within 2 - Though I still haven't finished the first Evil Within, I got far enough through it to confirm it's a great game, so news of its sequel only served to please fans of the original. If you haven't played the original title yet, I recommend doing so. Plus, the latest trailer for The Evil Within 2 looks incredibly interesting.
Release date: 13/10/17
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider - I've always been a fan of the Dishonored series. Both entries so far have been fantastic and with this new spin-off title putting you in the role of Meagan Foster, you'll once again be partnering up with Daud as you attempt the greatest assassination of all time in an attempt to kill the mysterious Outsider. Though there's no mention of Emily or Corvo being present here, I think this has a lot of potential and can't wait to play it.
Release date: 15/09/17
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - Saving the best for last, this looks incredible. The original was pretty good, but now we know Wolfenstein II will be built on the fast-paced, Rollercoaster-esque Doom engine, it looks faster than ever and as frantic as shooters come. Personally, this is the best decision ever made for the Wolfenstein series and gives us a lot to look forward to!
Release date: 27/10/17
Ultimately, I don't really think Bethesda needed to be at this years E3. Many fans were disappointed, with some even stating it was a complete waste of time staying up until 5am (we're a UK, London based Media Outlet) to watch what was essentially a half hour presentation, though I do feel that's a little harsh. What was shown was good. There just wasn't very much to see. The trailers and news revealed could have easily been released over the coming months via the use of Social Media, Bethesda's Blog or through their Online Mailing List.
